And Just Like That, No More Sugar Cravings!

How Fixing My Gut Annihilated my Sugar Cravings and Allowed Me to Lose Weight Seamlessly

If you are currently doing ANOTHER one of those “this is going to be my year to quit sugar OR reach my ideal weight” programs please hear me out.

As a health coach, I am embarrassed to admit it, but for years I coached on weight loss, clean eating challenge and cleanse and metabolism reset programs only to see my clients, including myself, yoyo up and down with bewilderment and discouragement. At some level, all of those programs consisted of food restricting, liquid diets, smaller food portions with more frequency, cutting out various food groups all together, obsessive exercise … oh and let’s throw in lots of affirmations and white knuckle will power while we are at it. Looking back on it, it was INSANITY.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Last year my life took an unexpected turn into the newly emmerging and exciting field of gut microbiome and gut brain axis communication which has drastically altered the course of my life. What started out as a journey to figure out why I couldn’t remember anything or think straight has turned into the solution for ALL of my health symptoms, some of the most unexpected being weight loss, drastically altered food cravings and reduced food consumption levels. Something we always said our health coaching programs did in the past but looking back at it now, they never really addressed the root cause of all the sugar cravings (high levels of bad bacteria) or food consumption levels (leaky gut).

The irony being, ALL of my health symptoms corrected themselves after restoring my gut microbiome diversity, repairing my leaky gut and healing the communication link between my gut and my brain.

For the past decade I consistently took a cereal bowl of whole food supplements including what I thought were good probiotics and ate probiotic enriched foods without feeling much difference. I hit a road block with my health back in June 2017 that was so scary it landed me in the hospital after a severe bout of insomnia induced anxiety and depression (all new to me). So what was I missing?

1. I had to reduce the levels of bad bacteria in my gut first before replenishing it with the good stuff.

I had no idea that the levels of bad bacteria in my gut were responsible for my sugar, refined carbohydrates and processed food cravings. Once those levels had been reduced I no longer had any desire to eat any of those things. My body literally craves veggies, fruits, my favorite green drink (I am drinking it as I write this), nuts, fish and lean protein etc. The thought of dairy, cheese and animal fat makes me nauseous. Whoa this is a complete 180 for me. No dieting required, my eating habits fixed itself on its own.

2. I had to replenish my gut with specific strains of probiotics linked to stress, anxiety, depression, cortisol and hormone balancing in order to kick start weight loss.

This is where I was off the mark all these years. Come to find out the health benefits associated with probiotics are strain dependent. The probiotics I had been taking before were for digestive and immune health. Good but not good enough. And it explains why I wasn’t feeling any difference. Adding in the correct strains of probiotics coupled with the correct prebiotics (food for good bacteria) and phytobiotics (protects good bacteria) increased gut my microbiome diversity somewhere in the range of 300-100% which is what our preliminary double blind, placebo controlled clinical trial that was recently completed showed.

3. I had to repair my leaky gut so my body could actually absorb nutrients correctly again.

Apparently my gut must have been very leaky. Embarrassing to admit being a health coach all of these years. Leaky gut, or “intestinal permeability,” is a condition in which the lining of the small intestine becomes damaged, causing undigested food particles, toxic waste products and bacteria to “leak” through the intestines and flood the blood stream. Gross right? So many health symptoms are related to leaky gut such as sugar and alcohol cravings, nutrient deficiencies, brain fog, fatigue, joint pain, headaches, skin issues and autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, celiac disease and Crohns diesease etc. Fixing this has had a profound effect on my overall health and ability to finally lose weight.

4. I had to get my “feel good” neurotransmitters, most of which are produced in the gut, communicating with my brain correctly again.

Did you know that our “feel good” neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin, GABA, norepinephrine are largely created in our gut and transmitted to our brain via vast communication network commonly referred to as the axis/vagus nerve? Me neither, at least not until recently. Getting that process back on track helped my anxiety and depression which in turned changed my food cravings and consumptions levels. I was just about to fill prescriptions for an anti-anxiety medication, an anti-depressant and a sleep aid when this timely info and solution divinely fell into my lap. For that I am grateful. The bottom line is what is going on in your head has a direct correlation to your gut.

I don’t normally focus on the scale but when all my clothes started to fall off I hopped on it to get a baseline of my weight just to see. I am now the weight I was in high school when I was drinking, doing drugs and had a raging eating disorder. Again the irony being, this time I did it the healthy way and without much effort. I just fixed the root cause of the problem – restoring my gut microbiome diversity and healing the communication network between my gut and brain.
